      I love hutch — 4 years ago(September 20, 2021 04:40 AM)

"The Last American Virgin" - ***3/4
      "American Graffiti" - ***3/4
      "My American Cousin" - ***1/4
      "Spetters" - ***1/2
      "Porky's" - ***
"Fast Times at Ridgemont High" - ***
"Times Square" - ***3/4 I just saw this movie for the first time maybe 6 months ago and it's the first really exciting new movie (new, for me) that I have seen in probably 20 years.
      "16 Candles" - ***3/4
      "I Vitelloni" - ***1/2
I have mixed feelings about "Dazed and Confused". First, the 70s soundtrack is impeccable and I could listen to these songs all day. I like the layout of the story and the movie is never boring. What really bugs me about this movie is the smug, cynical tone. The movie was released in 1994 and it took place the last day of school in 1976 (great year!), but unlike the bittersweet (and better done) "American Graffiti" (where there was a gap of eleven years), D&C doesn't have any real feelings for its teenage characters. There is no sense of authenticity for the year the movie is supposed to take place in.
I love "Welcome to the Dollhouse", but I cannot put it in this category because I don't see it as a "coming of age" picture in any way whatsoever. "Coming of age" would imply arriving at the time in your life where you have undergone something and it has changed your outlook on the world as well as the way you see yourself. When I think of the phrase "Coming of Age", I think of, more or less, a natural, normal and necessary step into one's own development as a human being.
When I think of WTTD and picture poor Dawn humming to herself on the bus, when all the other band kids are happy and excited about going to Disney World… To me, this is no coming of age story. And when Dawn asks, with what sounds like hope in her voice, "Are you still going to rape me?" (a person just has to watch it for themselves) This is the story of a girl born to doom.

        Dazed and Confused
is just a dress up party attempting to represent the era for me.
I haven't seen for a while, but I don't recall it really grabbing me and I wasn't really into the characters. It was superficial!

Times Square was great! Have you seen Rich Kids (1979)/w Trini Alvarado?

Yes, I did see that movie! I liked it. I thought it was very charming. Sort of had the feel of "My Bodyguard"/"A Little Romance".
Some of those late 70s/early 80s movies about adolescence were so good. I miss them!

Here's a few of my favorites!
                Lady Bird - 7.5/10
Really enjoyed the simple and beautiful storyline about a young teen who is growing on and commencing in her life showing the different moments of grief, learning, friendship and challenges they faced.
The Edge of Seventeen - 8.5/10
Personally, I felt this was the best performance from Hailee Steinfeld. She gives a compelling performance in this well-written and realistic portrayal of a high school girl's struggle for self-acceptance.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower - 8/10
This movie truly touches what it feels like to be a confused teenager in our world. From drugs to sexual abuse, this film catches it all. Great film to watch for those who enjoy movies that just truly grab your heartstrings and take them for a joy ride.

again the other night for the umpteenth time. Just love it! Not sure why it bombed, as it is consistently amusing and a lot of fun that does have a lot feel for the era its representing.
