The movie is considered a quintessential example of a flop/failure but privately, I always found it fascinating. Maybe this is because I had the good luck to read the paperback beforehand. The book delivers even if the movie doesn't. It's a fast-paced nerve-jangler.
I have no idea why the film came out so weak. Gene Hackman, Richard Widmark, and Eli Wallach are a dream cast.
Who –or what –exactly is at fault? I can't claim to know the answer. Candice Bergen perhaps –always undependable.
Or, Mickey Rooney. He's not at his best here either.
