This is indeed similar to the
Silence of the Lambs
controversy. Buffalo Bill was obviously transgender. But the makers of the film and the politically correct crowd in Hollywood claimed the psycho killer was not really trans, but only thought he was. Lol.
I thought the whole foundation of transgender theory is that we are to accept whatever gender any fool claims to be? Why does this not apply to Buffalo Bill as well?
It seems the bottom line here is that transgender folks can only be good people. There are no bad trannies!
I always thought the killer in
Dressed to Kill
was more a transvestite though. He enjoyed women's clothes to act out violence against women. But I never got the impression he really identified as a woman.
As for
Cruising
, I loved that film as a young gay guy. Lol. I'll be honest and say I'm not sure how well it holds up though. But the main criticism seemed to come from the S&M B&D community at the time. Though when I saw it the theater was filled with leathermen. It's a cult classic in that regard.

"Buffalo Bill was obviously transgender."

I always thought Buffalo Bill was just really confused about who he was. Like he
wanted
to be a transsexual because he had no fix on a clear identity. (which is a really sad thing, if you think about it.) I also thought that BB was way, way creepier than HL.

To be honest, I don't think "Bobbie" was a transvestite or a transsexual. I think she was just insane! Seriously, I think it was a plot gimmick that DePalma latched onto. But it worked. And the Norman Bates character was based on real-life mother-fixated necrophiliac Ed Gein. The Robert Bloch novel is 1,000 times more disturbing than Hitchcock's cool film.
As far as whether or not "Cruising" has held up, I must admit this just baffles me. I have never really understood what somebody means when they say something does not hold up well or does not stand the test of time. I mean isn't a movie supposed to be a kind of artifact of its time? Like maybe "The Boys in the Band" doesn't hold up well, but I would venture to say that it was a fairly accurate depiction of the gay social strata @ 1970. Wouldn't you?
And the one thing that absolutely does hold up in "Cruising" is the gay man's polygamous nature. (In other words, we're sluts!) At least I think so. But then of course some younger guy might come along and be absolutely caught off guard by the way things used to be. Too bad for him, I say.
Here's a picture of Ed Gein. He had pretty eyes.

I like that movie and I'm a fan of DePalma's then wife, Nancy Allen
I remember Angie Dickenson saying that was really her in the shower scene when it was really a body double
She said, "Would I deny that body?"

I like Angie and Nancy. Though I don't think I ever believed that was Angie's body. She always did have a healthy ego!
Speaking of body doubles, are you a fan of the 1984 "Body Double"? I love that movie. It is my second favorite BD film. And when push comes to shove, I've never heard a more sensually haunting score than Pino Donaggio's dreamy telescope theme. This one is for the ages. It's like a boy's initial discovery of masturbation or maybe the memory of it. I can hardly describe the feeling. But that's what good music is supposed to do!

Oh yes, I love Body Double! I think Melanie Griffith's hair looks cool in it
Yes, Melanie was doing the masturbation scene but it was made to look like Deborah Shelton was
She's gotten quite busty

Deborah looks good with the extra weight. I wonder if she had implants. If I were straight I think I would want my lady to be a little "zaftig". lol I love that word.
