yes i've seen Der Untergang. i remember liking it at the time but i grew tired of German WWII films on the whole due to oversaturation, that's why i didn't include it here. it's really not a bad film tho.
not seen Das Boot yet tho. i know it's a classic, so i'll probably get to it one day. -

Der Untergang? No way. It's a remake of two superior films: Hitler The Last Ten Days and The Bunker.

Yeah, that's all I can think of other than some of the ones you've listed. Maybe The Deer Hunter? But this is a genre I tend to actively avoid.
My favorite military movie would be The Last Detail (1973).

yep, gotcha. i've seen The Deer Hunter but i did not like it mostly bc of the demonisation of the Viet Cong here when Americans clearly were the aggressors and invaders in that war. it's just a dishonest perspective and made me not caring for any of the characters here. same applies to pretty much every American Vietnam war film.
i haven't seen The Last Detail yet, but it is on my radar. -

Agree on that, and it's one reason why I tend to avoid the genre. Much of it is mindless flag-waving bullshit. But what I actually liked in The Deer Hunter all happened before and after the war scenes, especially Meryl Streep's character. It actually reminded me, in part, of Wanda (1970), but far less interesting because, again, it's interrupted by war ****.

Not surprising. It definitely seems like something you'd like. It's certainly better than any war movie I can think of offhand lol. I do want to see Warfare, though. I just rewatched Men the other night and tend to enjoy Garlands work.

Barbara Loden is a treasure, truly.
as with Alex Garland, same. i think i've seen everything he's directed so far and liked Ex Machina the least. his other films were really good imo. i was wondering, have you read his novel, The Beach tho? i picked up a copy from the side of the road the other day bc i know the movie but didn't know Garland wrote the source novel, so i was curious as hell. i haven't gotten around reading it yet tho.
