This is an excellent film, the true story of how 400 Americans defeated 4,000 NVA at the battle of la Drang Valley in 1965. And this is my favorite scene.
The NVA never defeated the U.S. Military in any pitched battle. They just patiently waited until we got tired of the war and left.
It's a good movie, worth to watch.
Only one little hint:
NVA
is known in Europe as
Nationale Volks-Armee
…former GDR military.
It may cause some misunderstandings if you use this abbreviation for
North Vietnam Army
without closer explanation.
Bye.

PS Fixed that.
Bitte sehr.
Thanks for your
'golfclap'
again.
Will continue to troll your joke-thread, cause:- No dirty jokes about Dolphins anymore. ☻
- Constant bumping of your WoodySomething is annoying. (also of other old threads)
- You don't know from where this crazy poem
really
originates, even your Pizza-eye doesn't.

I can't speak for my co-conspirator, but I'm now doing cat jokes and memes.

Saw that…and I know that you don't use socks.
Just eating the bakery-rolls of early morning which aren't so fresh anymore.
Had some gossipping on the way there and back.
Heart breaking:
Old dog of the old woman was killed by somebody who pulled out of the parking space.
Blind driver-fish! ☻
Because of your OP will tell you the story of that "Ossi" (East-German) with whom me "Wessi" (West-German…not really, I'm Northern, ha!) is still befriended.
He grew up in Weimar and didn't want to join the NVA (Nationale Volksarmee).
But without serving duty at the army he wouldn't have been allowed to study at University.
He served during break of the wall (1989).
They were called in and first time in his
army-life
they were asked to take sharp bullets.
They were sitting and waiting in the cellar in Weimar with their sharpened guns and discussed if they would really shoot at their friends and family who were out to demonstrate for freedom.
But if they would've rejected orders they would've been the first
positioned at the wall
(= execution without court).
Luckily it all came different.
Means also, the break of the german wall wasn't that kind of peaceful.
And I know that russian tanks waited at the Polish border. ☻
He's the same guy with the conspiracy-theory about social networks.
Sorry, don't find the thread yet where I talked about it.
He said, at the end you're only talking with
one old man
always saying the same.
Fooling you!
So, will continue with the rolls…Mmmm…tastes good.

So sad to hear about the dog. I love animals, and have two cats.

Thanks for the story about the wall. That wall coming down was one of the greatest moments in history. I was
shocked
when it happened, because I thought it would not in my lifetime. I was also
overjoyed
, first for the German people, and secondly for mankind and freedom's triumph over tyranny. I would have given anything to have been there that night.
BTW, I had never heard of
"sharp bullets".
I had to google them.
Enjoy the rolls.

Excuse my
"sharp bullets"
.
Occasionally have no idea that it could be different in English and translate too verbatim.
OK, learnt (again) something…it's
"live bullets"
or
"live ammuntion"
.
Oh yah, even saw pictures of your both grey tigers.

One with a little white beside the tiger stripes.
One is a homebody and the other explores the world.

Very cute, both of your buddies.

You know, it had been only two times when I watched TV and couldn't believe it:- 09.11.1989 Break of the Wall in November
- 11.09.2001 September 11 attacks
Both times didn't grasp it at first, thought it must be movies.
Then the shock… and then overwhelming feelings.
In 1989 tremendous happiness and joy.
In 2001 enourmous anger and deep sadness.
1989 wanted to jump at once in the car and drive to Berlin. ☼
Some reasons prevented this…one was my then
'boyfriend'
.
Is there a better word for it?
Boyfriend
sounds stupid, even for a youngster.
Partner
sounds more like a business associate.
Well, the relationship didn't last much longer anyhow. ☻
2001 felt soooo sorry…and helpless…what to do from the distance, how to help?!
Our mother called at work and asked me to switch the news on.
She was barely able to speak, it was clear that there was something
very wrong
.
Guess everybody who had been old enough at that time, still remembers what he/she did when it happened.
Horrible, so horrible!
Because of some of your statements I'm pretty sure that you didn't
only
serve in the US Army, you had been in combat. Hopefully you were and are able to diggest that well and aren't haunted by ghosts of the past as our father was.
Although we verbally cross swords betimes, I like you very much, MovieMan.

And I like you also, Tara.
1989 and 2001, two watershed moments, one for
good,
the other for
evil.
And no, I did not see combat while in the Army.

P.S.
Re-reading my post you may misunderstand me.
Was
very
angry about my oldest neph who didn't serve his time at the army.
He chose "
alternative service
"…so peaceful, yah. ☻
We need good soldiers to defend us and democracy.
Reading the crap on this Board I'm even more convinced about it. -

I thought it should've been much better than it is. In fact, I think it would've been much better if Mel Gibson directed it, since Gibson has a knack for war films and battle scenes in particular. They also should've filmed it in SE Asia instead of California, knew it was filmed in America straight away!

This was undermining the authenticity right away, like Kubrick did with
Full Metal Jacket
, but his film had a surreal feel about it which I'd say was partly deliberate.
I thought the film was directed fine by Wallace, I just didn't like its stance.
Platoon
knew what it wanted to say and didn't set out to glorify its soldiers and hold them up to reverence or martyrs.

True. I think FMJ got away with it because they kept it in the city or the base camp, they never went out into the jungle.
ps I'm not a big fan of FMJ, but the Hue City set they built (I think in the London docklands) was tremendous.

There's always been something missing about the film that I can't quite put my finger on. It
should
have been a great war movie with the set up. I can only assume it's because of Mel Gibson starring but not directing. I feel the same about The Patriot, decent movie but could've been better, which I think Mel should've directed as well. Meanwhile some of my favorite war films, Braveheart & Hacksaw Ridge, were directed by Gibson. I think he must've been the difference. I guess Mel thought he was too old to direct and star in war movies by that stage. -

It's gotten much better over the years. I remember being very disappointed when I first saw it, bit it stands up better to repeat viewings. I can't watch the napalm scene. Jesus Christ. They should outlaw that ****. No way for a human to die.
