Avatar would be the one for now although I haven't seen the new Pirates of the Caribbean stranger Tides 3D.

DEEP SEA 3D
(IMAX)
The beauty of the huge IMAX screen is that so much of our vision is filled, we don't see it as a "window," but rather we are immersed in that environment. In IMAX, the movie extends from infinty "behind" the screen to in front of our noses. It feels like all one space.
In
DEEP SEA 3D
There was this wonderful shot of a great white shark just swimming in front of us. It was beautifully shot and felt so tangible. Underwater subjects lend themselves very well to 3D.
As for a 3D narrative movie, I thought
My Bloody Valentine
was well done. Not just the off screen effects, but watching it, I really felt like I was
in
that Pennsylvania coal town. The sense of presence was great.
AVATAR
disappointed me when the depth of field was narrowed. People complained about trying to look at a flower in the foreground, but since it was out of focus, it sent mixed signals to the brain. I realize Cameron used the classic technique to focus on the subject he wanted us to watch, but his story should do that instead. 3D works best IMO when the depth of field is greatestit best imitates our vision, even if it doesn't perfectly replicate it. -

Avatar had really good 3D, but it didn't make good use of it.
Jackass had the only live action high framerate 3D I've seen, and it was awesome.
Toy Story was perfect 3D animation.
Tron Legacy had the most entertaining and exciting 3D I've seen.

Tron:Legacy's 3D disappointed me a lot. I was expecting huge things from it when it was said the technology used for it was a step up from Avatar. The end product looked too blurry in most places.
Personally, (barring Avatar) I enjoyed Captain America's 3D a lot, I felt they used it really well and wasn't converted as a gimmick. -

FD5 was the best 3D film I've ever seen on screen; I know IMAX has a lot to do with that and that it was filmed in 3D not converted. I'm going to go in order from the BEST to WORST of what I've seen.
- Final Destination 5 (IMAX 3D)
- Resident Evil: Afterlife (IMAX 3D)
- Avatar (REAL D 3D)
- Beowulf (REAL D 3D)
- My Bloody Valentine (REAL D 3D)
- The Final Destinaton (REAL D 3D)
- Conan the Barbarian (REAL D 3D)

When the new print of "Dial M for Murder" was shown at the ICA in London, the person introducing it said that the distributors had no interest in showing it anywhere else and that the print had to be sent back to the US ASAP. How times have changed.
Hitchcock's use of 3D is so restrained that it makes a boring, stagebound movie even more so.
It's probably a character flaw but I feel cheated if things don't get hurled from the screen now and again.
