As 3D takings at cinema box offices around the world continue to be challenging, the modern boom in 3D movies kickstarted by James Camerons Avatar in 2009 seems to be petering out still further. For its been revealed that more key manufacturers are moving away from making 3D televisions, and thats likely to spell the end, longer term, for 3D Blu-ray as well.
The news was broken by CNET, who reported that LG and Sony have now confirmed theyre to stop making 3D sets. They follow Samsung and Panasonic, who have already confirmed the same. Its not the absolute end for 3D televisions, as there are still unsold sets on the market. Furthermore, lower profile and budget manufacturers are set to continue to make them for the foreseeable future. But it seems clear that its the beginning of the end for 3D in the home, at least in its current guide.
Its not the most surprising news, as the proverbial writing has been on the wall for some time. But nonetheless, 3D at home does enjoy niche support, and its worrying times for those whove invested heavily in the format.
Well keep you posted as we here more. Perhaps itll take James Cameron and Avatar 2 to reignite mainstream interest in 3D once again

Glad I got my LG at Christmas, had a feeling I mightn't be able to get a new 3d tv next Christmas.

What it will take is better marketing and more material available from broadcast TV. Neither of which will ever happen.
It's sad because whenever I've shown people high quality 3D movies on my TV they've been amazed by how good it is.

These people have probably never seen vintage 3D.
Ironic that this is on the BBC website as their attempts at 3D, apart from the Doctor Who episode, were beyond pathetic.
If a movie like "House of Wax" or "It Came from Outer Space" were shown alongside one of the many contemporary offerings, it would be interesting to see which made the most impact on the audience.
