I listed mine in order, and the movies listed before me are all good or great. Never saw "I Am A Jelly Donut", though.
If you want a great thriller/drama/mystery, check out "M".
"Stroszek" is a movie about this German guy who gets out of jail (drinking) and helps a prostitute by convincing her to move to Milwaukee. This all happens in the beginning, so don't think I spoiled it for you.
Alice In The Streets - road trip movie, by the same director who did "Paris, Texas"
Paradise: Love - newer movie about a middle-aged woman who goes to Kenya for sex tourism. Probably not a movie you'd wanna watch in front of your husband
The Forest For The Trees - another newer movie by Maren Ade about a beautiful woman who breaks up with her boyfriend (first scene) and tries to meet new people and move on as a teacher.
The Edukators - very cool political movie. The first scene is very unique.

In addition to those already mentioned;
Das Boot
and the early talkie
Madchen in Uniform
(1931).
The German's produced some of the greatest films to come out of the Silent Era. Definitely worth checking them out.
