So many times I'll be having a conversation, and we exchange what we like, and finally end up with someone else saying, "I love foreign movies" and of course I ask what their favorites are, and then pretty underwhelmed, especially when seems to be the only foreign movies they've ever seen.
And these two selections below aren't bad movies. I think I gave the first a 7/10, and the second a 6… It's just that these movies are constantly mentioned, while some of the great non-classics are ignored.

I love foreign films, but never got into Fellini. His films lack heart. Some of the directors I love cite him as an influence, but I just don't like him.
Visually stunning films, but I feel nothing. Contrast with Bergman, whose films are often emotionally intense.

I know what you mean about Fellini, but have you seen his 50s movies? Like "La Strada", which I think has a lot of emotion. I think his turning point was "La Dolce Vita", which I still think is a good movie, but the beginning of decadence, and a loss of humanity. I've seen every movie he made after (except his last), and they were average at best. Sometimes I think it's because many refer to him by his surname.
Bergman is one of my favorites. He's made more than a handful of great movies.
If you want heart, check out Vittorio De Sica, from "Shoeshine", "The Roof", "Miracle in Milan", etc. He was Italy's biggest acting star before he ever directed a movie. His performance in "General de la Rovere" is very great and humanistic.

I saw 8 1/2 and one other. Forget which ones since it's been a while.

I didn't like 8 1/2 and I would have never guessed he made "La Strada" (my 2nd favorite movie). "Nights of Cabiria" also features his wife again (Giulieta Masina) who is great in both those movies, and "i vitelloni" is a pretty good one about a group of friends who are mostly ****-ups, but each has some redeeming quality.
But by 1960, Fellini (and Antonioni) dropped the neo-realism, and went in completely different directions.
Anthony Quinn is also great in "La Strada", and his voice is dubbed!
