After a new COVID-virus variant was discovered in Danish mink in the autumn of 2020, Frederiksen ordered the culling of all mink in Denmark to prevent its spread to humans. The government subsequently admitted that there was no legal basis for this order; it was only created retrospectively by a parliamentary resolution. A parliamentary inquiry committee reached the same conclusion in June 2022. During the committee's work, Frederiksen was criticized for deleting text messages from the autumn of 2020 and thus withholding them from the committee.
