I still say that when you size them all up pound-for-pound …in terms of their achievements …no one even comes even remotely close to Sidney Poitier.
He alone is the most significant African-American actor ever to have emerged since World War Two.
Everyone else simply follows in the path he cut. He was the pioneer, he was the trail-blazer. His name towers over every other.
He's the only actor with chops not
'furnished for him'
by the hype machines in LA and New York.
All the agents, all the managers, all the PR lackeys…it's easy to follow in someone's wake when you've never navigated on your own.
