It doesn’t matter where you place the camera if the script is ****. Just take Nolan for example, he overstuffs scenes with endless dialogue, all you can do with the camera is a bunch of over shoulder shots to capture the endless conversations.
Kubrick does the opposite, endless shots of nothing going on, to the detriment of the film. 2001: A Space Odyssey is the perfect example of Kubrick waisting character development and plot so he can sniff his own farts as the camera rolls.
If either director let someone else write the scripts, their bad habits wouldn’t lead to their films veering far off the tracks.
Martin Scorsese for example didn’t write Raging Bull or Taxi Driver, which is why they’re his best films. Had he written those films, they would have veered off the tracks. That’s why writers are important, Directors need to stay in their lane. -

Kubrick's "The Moon Landing" still holds up pretty well to this day.
Even though they lost the original footage and all we have now are bad copies, which is understandable since no one at the time could have possibly known how culturally important this film would be, it is still possibly one of the most viewed films of all time.
It is also possible that the success of this film gave him unprecedented freedom and access to resources no other filmmaker had during his career along with final cut on all his subsequent films. Although it could be argued that was not the case for "Eyes Wide Shut" since he died of a sudden heart attack shortly before the film received its final edit and release.
TL:DR - Nolan is the bigger hack.
