David got his stage last name from Jim Bowie. As a kid he'd watch stories of Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie on TV. He had a Bowie knife too.
His real name was David Jones but at the time
Davy Jones
was a huge pop star so he had to think of something different and used "Bowie".
