Should music be classified by the skin colour of its performers or writers? Substitute black for white & it immediately seems like a racist question.

Of course music shouldn't be classified by race, but I felt that the point of this thread was that there aren't nearly as many well-known Black British artists in comparison to Whites.

To a degree, possibly, but I'd wager the more important factor is that the black population in the UK is relatively small.

then that there aren't so many black singers / bands is understandable & logical.
It might have something to do with there being so few black bands, too. Loads of solo singers, rappers, souly groups etc, but I can't think of one regular-set-up band (ie guitars, drums, vocals) with all black musicians, & the UK loves its bands.

The UK has produced quite a few reggae bands.
I have a sneaking suspicion that there are probably more successful multi-racial bands in the UK than there are in for unstance the US - the Specials, The Beat, The Selecter, Simple Minds, The Libertines, UB40 spring to mind

Neneh Cherry, who has a couple of mentions here, was born in Stockholm to a Swedish mother and Sierra Leonean father.
Until a few years ago I always thought she was American (!)
