there are a ton of mid-tempo parts that don't do much,
For the most part I've always thought Metallica were at their very best when they were playing slow or mid tempo stuff.

Those songs have mostly been bland for me going all the way back to Master of Puppets. The Thing That Should Not Be and Leper Messiah are far and away my least favorite songs on that album.

My least favorite on MOP is Damage Inc. (though I still like it) which is also probably the fastest song on the album. I guess i've just never really been a big speed metal fan. If it's TOO fast, it kind of looses the groove for me. I also like Slayer's mid tempo stuff better than their fast stuff. But in my opinion Megedeth did speed metal better than Metallica or Slayeror pretty much anyone else for that matter. Black Friday is probably the best speed metal song ever written.

Some of the riffs were pretty good, but the album overall really doesn't hold my attention. It's just too dull and generic. Metallica used to push the musical envelope and then started to reinvent themselves every few years. Now, they are clearly entrenched in a comfort zone.
It's really just Death Magnetic part 2.

If that's true, then I'll probably like it because I thought Death Magnetic was pretty solid aside from the production which was WAY too loud and distorted.

I have only listened to the tracks on Youtube, so music quality is so so, but from what I hear, the production is nothing like Death Magnetic. Without good speakers or headphones, it's hard for me to make that judgment, but word 'round the campfire is they learned their mistakes from Death Magnetic.

I'm checking out some of the songs now and I like it so far. To all the people saying it sucks because it isn't groundbreaking, innovative, etc. like their old stuffwhat do people expect from a band that's been around 35 years? Any band I can think of that's been around that long sounds tired and uninspired in comparison to their classic stuff. It's inevitable.

You know what's scary to me, is that Death magnetic came out 8 years ago! That means kids who were in elementary school when it came out are now entering college! That's damn near a decade ago yet I still think of it as the "new" Metallica album as if it only came out 2 or 3 years ago. I don't know if it's just because i'm getting old or what but this last 10 years has gone by crazy fast for me.

That doesn't seem as crazy to me because St. Anger and especially ReLoad seem like they came out a really long time ago to me. But for some reason death Magnetic only seems a few years ago to me. It's weird how different events that happened at about the same time can end up seeming separated by years in hindsight. For example death magnetic came out like 2 months before Obama was elected the first time but for me it seems like it's been twice as long since Obama was elected as it has been since death magnetic came out.
