R.S. Summary
:
Polly Harvey, happy? It was a surprise: But album number five found her in New York and in love. The result was lusher than anything she had recorded but also vibrant and surprisingly catchy.
My Vote
: It's in the top handful of my most cherished albums from the 00s, so I think that's enough to count for a
yea
. And it's about as far removed qualitatively from the previous album on this list as contemporary rock music could be. I'm quite madly in love with Polly Jean. The aesthetic thrust of this one is so expansive, rousing, and welcoming to my ears that I can't imagine living without it now. Even Thom Yorke's appearance on "The Mess We're In" is pleasing - he sings with great conviction and even sounds sensual. The punk rock influences that pepper this album are quite tasty, and I can hear plenty of Chrissy Hynde as well (which is always welcome). It might not have the visceral punch of her earlier albums, but it strikes me as more heartfelt and profound.
