Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Movie Awards: The 1987 Oscars Were a Complete Shitshow
sheetsadam1 — 4 months ago(November 26, 2025 12:58 AM)
Last night I watched
Wings of Desire
for the first time and I Googled it afterward, curious about how many Oscars it had won. Only to find that it hadn't been nominated for a single one. It literally received fewer Oscar nominations than

Of course… But even through the entirety of the '70s, the Best Picture nominees are (with a few notable exceptions) movies that have stood the test of the time and are still lauded by film buffs today. By 1987, they were capturing almost none of the cultural zeitgeist.

I didn't like Wings of Desire. Lot of missing choices as well.

Totally forgot about Walker! That's another one they missed. Will edit the post.
Also, La Bamba would likely get some nominations today now that musical biopics are all the rage.
I don't think I saw Matewan on the list of films you've reviewed

Yes, I've seen Harlan and gave it a 10. It's still fresh in my mind.

I completely agree with your #1 ranking for John Candy in Supporting Actor. It's easily one of the best performances of the decade.
