A very worthy film to be the first Best Picture winner.

I wasn't sold on the idea at first. Woo, planes, how exciting, but that attitude changed very quickly. It's not about a couple of guys in a love triangle flying around in the air. It's a sweeping World War I epic with an engaging story and stunning visuals. The clouds looked grand and glorious, the scenes depicting the war were amazing, and the film offered plenty of pathos and comedy. There was even a little bit of sex appeal. (I'll admit to pausing Clara Bow's topless scene and watching it back in slow motion.)
I loved the restoration on this one and the way that they opened it up by going through all of the various Paramount logos over the years. The original score given to the film was a masterpiece as well. And I was stunned by just how modern some of the camera angles or action sequences felt. I thought going into the film that it would be a one time viewing, but now I'm almost certain that I'll be seeing it again. -

I agree. Just saw it for the first time, and this film could probably be nominated for best picture today. Great storytelling is timeless.
SPOILER:
Amazing plot twist at the end. Jack wanted to take down a German plane as revenge for David's death. And in so doing, he actually killed David. Heart wrenching.
Mirror inspector is a job I could really see myself doing. -

I had seen bits of this film in documentaries read about it seen Buddy Rogers talk about it but nothing prepared me for the experience of seeing the full restored film.
144 minutes of quite astounding story telling.
The battle scenes have to be amongst the most compelling ever shot and nothing nothing comes close to the sheer brilliance of the aerial scenes.
Hats off to Buddy and Dick and the whole flying crew for putting on film a totally enthralling experience.
And Clara has whatever IT is I now understand why my uncle was such a fan!
This is a film that certainly deserved its Oscars. -

This is truly a great movie. Totally agree on the visuals, it's simply stunning. I also love the story as it's not a romance or an anti-war film in the way that we've come to expect sweeping epics to be. Just a great movie well worth it's oscar and i certainly will revisit the film.

I'm not even a fan of war films, but I thought this was great. Agreed about it being a worthy first Best Picture winner.
And I'm glad I'm not the only one who paused Bow's topless scene
