lew ayres was a bit young for this role i think and it was weird watching a film with no music soundtrack, not even for opening/ending
(there was a bit of music for the dancing scene, which seemed to be all the rage back then)

I though the same thing, especially since I know him as an older actor. But really, that face was way too young looking to be taken as a hard edged and tough boss. In fact it was unbelievable. But still, a very interesting film and a great showcase for a very young Cagney.

Watching it now and Ayres looks pretty tough to me, in a remarkably handsome way ! Love the way everyone wore suits, hats, even the crooks ! Now everyone wears T shirts, shorts, sweats and flip flops ! What a world !

It was all in his eyes; the way he lowered his head and look over his eyebrows. What a beautiful man!
I told you a million times not to talk to me when I'm doing my lashes!
