Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — The Invisible Man

    Jef2187 — 21 years ago(January 02, 2005 04:18 PM)

The Invisible Man can only be completely invisible when he's not wearing clothes. Therefore he is naked when he is invisible and he is invisible for much of the movie, especially when he is evading the police. If he's naked then this begs the question, why doesnt he get sick? He's running around in the dead of winter and we know this because it snows in the end of the movie. Would'nt he catch cold, hypothermia or pnemonia? He's running around naked for heavens sake. In the beginning of the movie he is wearing a heavy coat and at the end he seems invulnerable to the weather.

You can't catch a cold from merely being outside without clothes on. But he was merely naked and on the run from the police for what seemed to be 2 days in the movie. He was also maddened by the elixer, which Im sure made him not care about his own health. If you notice, he's too hooked on the notion that he is a mastermind and every body should grovel at his invisible feet because of his genius, so I doubt he's worrying about pnemonia. But if you do notice, when he does have a chance, he puts pants on and scares the hell out of the townsfolk. Also with the conversation with the ass who is trying to hook up with Griffon's woman, he says he handled the cold on the roof of the car to get to him and did everything just so he could kill him.

The book builds more on the pitfalls of running about naked, but the film does make him mention needing a fire and a "warm rug" several times.

Actually, he must not have been completely naked as the footprints in the snow at the end of the movie are not of bare feet, but the outlines of shoes.
I know he's supposed to be naked, but I can't see how the film-makers overlooked this.

I've always thought this was one of the biggest (if not the single biggest) movie goof ever.

That has always bothered me. I love the movie, but I can't watch that scene.

The potion that makes you invisible also changes the shape of your feet to look like shoes. Duh, obviously. Everybody knows that.

Also, after robbing the bank, he doesn't cast a shadow. he is invisible but is he also transparent? Should he produce a shadow? To his friend he tells that he can not go out during rain because people could see it dripping from his shoulders

Of course he doesn't cast a shadow. He's invisible, which means the light goes right through him.

It could be that the potion that made him invisible also made him more tolerant to harsh conditions.

Nothey put him in pajamas. We see the empty set of pajamas talking to Gloria Stuart. Don't we? I have to re-watch

They were placed on him after he was shot.

I mean, give me a break! You are the only one thinking here. We can suspend reality and believe he is invisible but it is too much to imagine that he can survive without clothes on like every other mammal on the (in real life) planet?

If you read the book you will see he gets a cold and sneezes alot. It often gives away his position.

Funny thing is that scientists have recently said that invisibility for humans will be possible within a decade. I'm not making this up! Check it out:
