I wouldn't call Edgar weak eitherI understand why someone would, but I don't think kindness and morality should be classified as "weak." He may seem weak to someone like Heathcliff and Catherine, but I think, in a way, he's stronger than they'll ever be, because he's able to put his interests aside and show genuine warmth and kindness to others, while hardly losing his temper ever (speaking from just being a live, I don't know how he could stay so composed and even tempered when everything was happening, but I guess it's just his good nature or perhaps the influence of Christianity, since it was a major part of life in those times). Catherine and Heathcliff, on the other hand, can't control themselves or their emotions, while, worst of all, using other, innocent people for their own means.

People really put down Atticus Finch? What? That's crazy! I can't even believe that, you know. I mean, Atticus was not only a great, great father, but he was an exceptionally decent, good man. What an admirable character he was. I can't believe anyone would say anything that ridiculous, thoughactually, maybe I can. People do say stupid things all the time

Cathy: EllenI AM Heathcliff (just the way she delivers the line is wonderful)
Heathcliff: My tears don't love you, Cathy. They blight and curse and damn you!
Heathcliff: Is that all i've become to you? A pair of dirty hands? (I can't think of the rest but when he slaps her and says something else about his hands
I want to be alone. I think I have never been so tired in my life

My favorit quote is when Heathcliff says to Cathy:
"If he loved you will all the power in his soul for a whole lifetime, he couldnt love you as much as I do in a single day.
Not he. Not the world. Not even you Cathy can come between us."
Only Laurence Olivier could say thouse words. -

A few of my fav quotes:
Cathy: I dreamt I went to Heaven, and that Heaven didn't seem to be my home. And I broke my heart with weeping to come back to Earth. And the angels were so angry they flung me out into the middle of the heap, on top of Wuthering Heights. And I woke up sobbing with joy.
Cathy: Everything he's suffered, I've suffered. The little happiness he's ever known, I've had too. Oh, Ellen, if everything in the world died and Heathcliff remained, life would still be full for me.
Also, where Cathy simply says "Forgive me, Heathcliff" when they are at Pennistoncraig (sp??) and both are clinging to each other. Perhaps it's more the way she says it to him that gets me! -

I LOVE that quote!! Merle Oberon is great as Cathy: Wuthering Heights is my favourite classic film. I love it too when she's on the cliff Laurence Olivier looks so nice to hug in that scene; they have such a great chemistry, they're so romantic together. My favourite quote, however is when Cathy is on her deathbed, holding heathcliff, and she says
Cathy: I told you, Ellen when he went away that night in the rain I told you I belonged to him that he was my life, my being
Ellen: Don't listen to her ravings!
Cathy: It's true it's true! I'm yours, Heathcliff I've never been anyone elses Take me to the window let me look at the moors with you once more, my darling once more
EVERY time I get to that bit (and I rewatch it again and again)I'm in tears, the words and the whole atmosphere of it is so beautiful. And the music, the music! I'm a student violinist, and call me crazy, but I played along with the string section one night when I was listening to the score. It's amazing, so lyrical so heartfelt. I loved it. -

I'm glad you like that quote too, Olivier indeed looked so handsome in that scene! It's only three words but it says a lot emotionally as they're hugging. Apparently Olivier didn't like Merle very much since he wanted Vivien Leigh to play Cathy but he sure sucked it up in that scene didn't he, none of his ill feelings towards Merle shone through!
I thought Merle was good as Cathy and had some shining moments but personally, I think Vivien Leigh would have made a better Cathy acting wise. But then again, that's just my opinion. Besides, Vivien wouldn't have played Scarlett in GWTW if she did anyhow!
Is it me or did Olivier never looked so gorgeous and heartbreaking on film when he says "Why did you stay so long??" to Cathy when she returns from the Linton's with Egar!!! It just melts my heart!
OK, I'll stop now.

I've heard that Olivier and Oberon actually greatly disliked (if not downright hated) each other. Has anyone heard this? If they did hate each other, it makes their scenes together even more amazing, since they seem to be so much in love.

I think the anger ended up helping the chemistry, considering most of the romance was brooding and tragic.
My favorite quote is near the end.
Heathcliff: What do they know of Heaven or Hell, Cathy, who know nothing of life? Oh, they're praying for you, Cathy. I'll pray one prayer with them - I repeat 'til my tongue stiffens - Catherine Earnshaw, may you not rest so long as I live on! I killed you. Haunt me, then! Haunt your murderer! I know that ghosts have wandered on the Earth. Be with me always. Take any form, drive me mad, only do not leave me in this dark alone where I cannot find you. I cannot live without my life! I cannot die without my soul!
