We see it left behind getting covered in snow.
How he got it back is the real mystery.

His Mom or Dad pulled it out of the snow and put it aside for him. At one point Kane even mentions going to look at his late mother's belongings that had been put into storage when she died. The sled may have been among them.

While the film never shows the literal retrieval of the sled, it provides a key narrative clue that explains how it ended up at Xanadu.
The mystery is "solved" through Charles Foster Kane's hoarding of his mother's belongings:
The Warehouse Discovery: When Kane first meets Susan Alexander, he mentions he is on his way to a warehouse to look through his mother's old possessions, which he had received after her death.
A Symbol of Love: It is implied that his mother, Mary Kane, kept the sled for decades after he was taken away. By retrieving it from the warehouse, Kane unwittingly reclaimed the very symbol of the innocence he lost.
Lost in Plain Sight: Once brought to his estate, the sled was likely just "filed away" among his thousands of other crates and artifacts. It remained in his possession, forgotten and unrecognized, until the staff threw it into the incinerator as "junk" after his death.
The irony is that while the reporter Jerry Thompson searches for the meaning of "Rosebud", he is standing right next to the answer as workers toss it into the fire.
