It's almost impossible to believe that Robert Preston was only 23/24 years old when this film was made, almost FIVE years younger than baby faced Alan Ladd. I reckon anyone not realising Preston's age would guess him to be at least 10 years older. He even sounds as if he's in his mid-thirties.

Yes, I too thought he was olderto the point that I had to check whether he was really the same Robert Preston who appeared in "Victor/Victoria"! (In which he looked good for his actual age!)

The stress of all those early years "in the closet" and then coming out in late middle age rejuvenated him.

What about Laird Cregar? He was only 27 when he made this movie. Looked mid-forties. People definitely looked older then. Hairstyles and harder lives, I guess?

They were much more mature than people of the same age are today. Perhaps that somehow contributed to them looking more mature.
