She is the same character, and is the grandaughter of Henry and daughter of Ludwig.

Technically, but obviously the continuity is Lose n the Frankenstein bits, it should really only be viewed as a direct Sequel to The Wolfman.

It's really a sequel of both "The Wolf Man" and "The Ghost of Frankenstein."

Don't be so hard on yourself, dujack01-1. 🙂 How many other movies are sequels to two movies that can be used as a comparison?

Well, you're right. I never knew it was a sequel to Ghost of Frankenstein. Though it's obvious that they added in new characters for the villagers like Vazeck or whatever his name was and the police chief.

You know I have been watching this movie for many years since I was 7 (around Halloween time I pull out my favorite Universal monster movies and this was the best of the post-Wolf Man films). And I always thought it was a big continuity gap that she is the daughter of Basil Rathbone from Son of Frankenstein, because he didn't live in the castle long enough for that to make sense.
Well I watched it again because of the new Wolf Man remake and went through all those furry Universals. And for some reason I popped in Ghost of Frankenstein as part of my Legacy collection. Unlike Frankenstein, Bride of or this one, I had only watched Ghost once as an adult when I got the legacy collections back in 2005. So, this was only the second time I'd seen it and it clicked. This is Elsa from Ghost of Frankenstein!!! Am I slow?
With that said both actresses were wonderful and probably the better ones Universal had in its 1940s monster movies. Manney and Ankers both gave class to these films moreso than other actresses. Though I am curious why the recast. Ankers was doing these B-Universal horrors until the mid-40s so she was obviously still in their stable when they made this film. I wonder if they simply recast the part because they thought audiences may remember she played Gwen, Larry's would be sweetheart in The Wolf Man? I don't know, but I think it would be interesting to find out why.

On another thread on this board, somebody speculated that the real reason Lugosi's dialogue and all the references to the Monster being blind were cut was that the events of
                  Ghost
weren't recapped in this film and preview audiences were confused (rather than merely finding Bela's voice coming out of the Monster's mouth funny, as widely claimed). If so, if the narrative played off
                  The Wolfman
                  much more so than
                  GoF
, that would explain Ankers' role in
                  Wolfman
                  preventing her from repeating her
                  GoF
role here. However, I fully concede that this is one speculation on top of another.

That was what happened-Universal didn't want to use Ankers as she had played the love interest in THE WOLFMAN and they thought audiences would be confused so they got Ilona Massey to play the part-and she had that sexy little accent too. I agree, Massey was hot!!
