I wonder if young Charlie rules the roost, and seems to take control constantly, because her mother is fragile and her father appears to be so detached from his family? She certainly inserts herself into situations either her mother or father should be handling!

She seems to be more of a mother to Anne than the real mother is. She loves her sister, but she also is the disciplinarian.

Charlie probably was a close to her younger sister due to her parents' distractions.
