Richard Widmark demonstrates his range as a non villanious character. Jack Palance takes over the role of a psycho killer. Great chase scenes and riviting action. I loved the scene where they drop the plague victim from the tenement stairs.

The thing that has always struck me the most about Jack Palance is his face. The combination of those chiseled cheekbones, long, prominent nose and deep-set eyes made him terrificaly compelling. One of his roles which used his features to great effect was "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1968) (TV)". Well worth seeing, in case you haven't.

Yeah I watched Widmark just two days ago in his debut in Kiss Of Death as a cackling psychopath and now he pulled the rather heroic good natured family guy role off very effectively as well. A gifted, versatile actor he was (of course, he had another outstanding - and, again, very different - role in 1950 as well, in the probably better known Night And The City).

the dropping scene was great - unexpected and shocking.
very modern film for its time.
not only action - i liked the scene when he talks with his wife - it is unusual also for that time, it reminded me on woody allen films. it's filmed at wide angle and we can see both of them in the kitchen at the same time, they have chit-chat not important to story itself but it gave soul to film and we get to know the characters more intimately.
the director sure knew his job i'd say.
