Am wondering if Bab's constant lighting of a smoke, taking a few drags then throwing it away is supposed to give insight into her character in some way..? that she is frivolous? hot & cold? indecisive? easy to rid herself of something she no longer wants?

If it is symbolic, I think it's a cue to her restlessness and impatience with her life and the way she sees it going.
