I saw him in another noir called 14 Hours and remembered I didn'rt care for him in that that either. He's a little over the top and overacts IMO. Kind of reminded me of Lon Chaney Jr.'s over the top acting style.
You find some wonderful things in trash.

FORGET WONDERFUL THINGS IN TRASH AND SEE THIS FILM AGAIN, DOUGLAS IS WELL SUITED FOR THIS. SOME OTHER BASEBALL ANGEL FANTASY HE WAS IN WAS ALSO SUPERB, LOOK IT UP. THIS GUY WAS WELL ACCOMPLISHED UNLIKE THE ACTORS OF TODAY.

Douglas was superb - perfectly portraying an insecure, teddy bear of a
        character. He was perfectly cast.

I agree ! I've loved Paul Douglas forever. He was married to Jan Sterling, another person I loved ! Their style of acting was great. Tough, but with hearts of gold. Miss them so much !

I too, like Paul Douglas. Loved him in "A Letter to Three Wives".

I have seen several of his movies and I liked him in all of them, especially, "Fourteen Hours" and "Clash By Night".

In the context of the time's acting style he was pretty good, especially here. I was however very distracted by how he wore pants a couple sizes too tight and kept sucking in his huge belly throughout this film.

I think Douglas is a good actor in many of his roles and shouldve been okay in this. But I get the feeling he was directed to act clumsier than was necessary to understand the character as inelegant. The guy couldnt even handle a bottle of perfume without losing grip and spilling it.
However, I wouldnt hold this against Douglas in particular. The entire movie comes off a little hammy.

Couldn't disagree more. The acting in this film is superb. Even Monroe,
certainly never one of the great actresses of ANY generation, turns in a
strong performance. I credit the great Fritz Lang, who created a terrific
sense of mood and atmosphere (you can almost smell the salty air and the
                      grease in the kitchen).
