I explained Santa is the spirit of Christmas. Kindness, giving, helping etc. Santa is as real as the meaning, I took them to s giving tree and let them pick a gift for someone on the tree. Told them, that was pretty real, Santa just has more magic to do that for the whole world.
Then threw them off with a boot print from the fireplace.
