I just watched "The House of Frankenstein" with Lon Chaney Jr. He was pretty good in what was otherwise a so-so movie. I couldn't remember what other movie that I had seen him in and after some investigation, I realized it was this one. Kind of an "A-Ha" moment. Anyway, I completely agree that his performance in this movie was overlooked. As you have already pointed out, his work in the horror genre probably hindered his ability to be taken seriously by TPTB.

Don't you LOVE that ah-ha moment? I have it a lot, except often it's someone in a small role whose name I probably haven't caught, which makes it more difficult - especially if there is a lot of time, makeup, or hair colour/style involved. Recently I saw Michael Dorn in a sit-com, and it wasn't until I heard this voice that I was able to put it together it was Worf from Star Trek: Next Generation. He just looks odd to me without his Klingon prosthetics (to be honest, the first time I saw him in something other than ST:TNG, it was a whole revelation because it had just
never
occurred to me that Worf is 'brown' and played by a brown skinned actor. I was never much into the original ST and just accepted that he was what Klingons looked like. Yeah, it's a bit embarrassing that I was in my late 20s or early 30s when that happened -

Ha Ha!! I see what you did there with your avatar Everytime I watch this movie and see Chaney returning to the shed to let the 2 of them loose, I chuckle to myself over the image of him doing that change over to the wolfman there on that bright, moon lit night
and scaring the living sheet outta Poitier and Curtis
