i just watched the movie again - for the first time in at least 40 years
i remembered it slightly from seeing it as a kid
all i could recall was poitier's 'bowlin' green sewin' machine' singing
reading an imdb review afterwards the reviewer wrote tc earned a best actor oscar nomination for the role and that poitier earned another as well
that they prolly split the vote giving david niven the coveted statuette
the reviewer makes mention that tc carries a grudge at not having won
no offense intended as it is an oscar nomination deserving performance certainly
but poitier's tops tc's in my view so if anyone got wienied out of oscar
(sorry lame pun) it was sidney p not tony c
but a resume having 'some like it hot', 'the defiant ones' and 'sweet smell of success' is without question stuff for legend
still as much as a hollywood legend tony curtis deservedly is i believe it is more for his matinee idol good looks and so readily imitatable (sp?) voice&mannerisms rather than unforgettable acting skills
i think tony curtis should have been thankful to have received the accolade an oscar nomination is and left it at that
holding your own against screen presences like poitier, lemmon, and lancaster took some major doing and tony curtis certainly did
i hope he lives long enough to get a well deserved lifetime achievement oscar
he is or seems to be one of the last living links to hollywood's golden age
and the films mentioned above are all classics without question

I think Paul Newman that year was far more deserving that year for Cat on a hot tin roof than Tony and Sidney, both of them were great in this film but one didnt stand out over the other . I dont blame Tony being angry about David Niven winning as his role was a supporting not a lead, but thinking he shouldve won instead I dont think so , but that`s just an opinion. Shame that was his only ever nomination , lucky for Sidney he was nominated again and did win.

According to TCM, it was Curtis whom urged to have Poitier's name moved from supporting actor to being listed equal to his in the film. So, I doubt he felt any feelings of 'grudge' against his costar. He may have felt disheartened, as does anyone that loses the award. He was a good actor, it was his 'pretty boy' looks that made people see him as less than a good actor, and apparently still does, according to this thread.
