I saw this tonight and I have to say I agree with the other commenters that the original more supernatural ending that was scripted would've made this a much better ending than the lame last 5 minutes or so with the realistic/logical ending where someone admits to doing the killings and gives their reason. I loved the movie up until that lame typical studio ending. It played like a good extended episode of The Twilight Zone.

I also agree that the ending as originally written would've been better. I think that it was due to the sensibilities and standards of the 50's that they chose to portray a logical, 'natural' end. The images of a horde of resurrected corpses waiting outside for Kraft was probably too graphic for the producer and director to even imagine their audience sitting through. In fact, even when "Night Of The Living Dead" came out 10 years later in '68 most people were shocked and offended by the graphic imagery, thus it was relegated to the status of an 'underground' film for the subsequent 10-15 years.
and your suffering will be legendary even in Hell!!

I concur. Strangely we are now again in an era where trying to make a movie "realistic" often kills it.
