How old were you when you saw this movie?

I was a toddler when this film was released (you can do the math; I'm way past declaring my age ;]) Ironically, I avoided it for years because I thought it was a Tennessee Williams script and I just can't get into most of his stuff. Much of it is just too dark and twisted for me. Anyway, I was looking for some of the early Newman and Woodward films about a year ago, read about this one, found out it was Faulkner, not Williams and, more importantly, that the chemistry between Newman and Woodward was awesome. That was all the recommendation I needed. I bought the DVD and it's become one of my all time favorite movies. I've probably watched it at least 15 times in the last year. I can't believe I spent all those years deliberately avoiding it.

I saw this movie last year when I was 20. I watch TCM all the time and I wish I had more time to devote to looking for great classics to watch. I have to content myself with the few gems I've found so far, such as TLHS.

I saw this movie for the first time when I was about 15 and I remember the quick butterflies in my stomach whenever Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward kissed. I'm 22 now and I still get those butterflies everytime I watch it!

I'm glad to see someone so young interested in movies that have actual diolog instead of 4 letter word fillers. I first saw this movie when it first came out in 58. I am a child of the fifties, and was 16 at the time. I didn't appreciate it as much then as I do now. If you like the Neuman-Woodward combo check out "From the Terrace" 1959. The same chemestry as in 'Summer"

48-I saw it yesterday (11/16/2006), after clicking through the channels and catching oh! an old movie, I knew right away this was one I'd want to own. The witty dialogue is something else, and being from Louisiana I understand and appreciate "the other Big Daddy" in Orson Welles' excellent portrayal of Will Varner. Great cast and performances, enjoyed the scenery.

I think I was about 10 or 11 when I first saw it, and then a couple of times through my teens (when I understood a lot more of it). I haven't seen it in probably over ten years now I'd love to see it again. It's great watching the same movie at different stages in your life; you get something different out of it each time.
I might have to look into investing in the DVD .. it hasn't been on tv here (Australia) in so long. -

I first saw this movie when I was about 16 and I'm 24 now. We had to watch it in my English class because we were studying classic actors and movies and Paul Newman was one of them. I remember when my class started watching it, all the girls was like "WHO is THAT?? wow, he's hot!" And after that, I've been hooked on Paul. I saw The Long Hot Summer and A Cat On a Hot Tin Roof in the same week, so that was glorious lol. I must say The Long Hot Summer is a great movie and Paul was gorgeous as usual, and also he and Joanne's chemistry was on fire. They totally were putting themselves into their parts lol

The Long Hot Summer came out when I was 9 years old, but my Momma would have tanned my hide if I'd even asked to go see it at the movies!
It was many years before it came on the TV, and so I'm guessing I was in my teensit was and is one of my all time favorites! -

I was 45 - just watched it today!
I thought Orson Welles and cast were wonderful. I also find it much lighter than Tennessee Willliams' other plays. The characters are lovingly created and the family goes through some healing. Usually everyone's in a puddle at the end of Williams plays.

I had to be about 6 years old the first time I seen this gem of a film and haven't seen it in years this Is where I truely fell in love with both Newman & Woodward you couldn't deny the magic between the two of them and like somebody else said I get those same butterflies when they kiss cause you can see how dearly they loved each other and it's painful to see those same scenes now since he passed away cause it inevitablely triggers an image of her so lost and lonely without him and it just breaks my heart to see her so emotionally broken

I am also 19 years old and am also a HUGE Paul Newman fan. The Long Hot Summer is my favorite movie that he did. And I agree that it's a great romantic movie!
But, I have had my obsession a little bit longer. I first saw this movie on TCM (the best channel in the world in my book) and I was around 15, 16 yrs old.
I'm so so so happy that there are other people that are my age that really appreciate and love the older movies! I'm not alone!! Ha Ha
Keep loving him and the many other talented actor/tresses from back in the day!

Saw this great movie when I was a sophmore in college in 2004. Had seen Paul Newman in many films before hand (Awesome in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by the way. His character here is so charming and yet, misunderstood. Joanne Woodward gives a strong performance, her character is admimrable and relatable, at least to me

However in the interest of an honest answer I was actually 18 seeing this film and absolutely loved it. I thought it couldn't get any better than Cool Hand Luke(and thus far, strictly speaking, it hasn't) but Paul Newman in "The Long, Hot Summer"? There aren't words that do it justice
All the leads were fabulous though.
