Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — The Long, Hot Summer

As I watched this, I could not help but notice how much Orson Welles' makeup job and characterization reminded me of Marlon Brando's appearance and persona in his last few years.

I've heard Marlon studied Orson's performance in The Long Hot Summer so that's probably why you see the resemblance

I can't help but think Varner had some influence on Jackie Gleason's Buford T. Justice. I'm only half way through the movie, but I have to agree with the critics on his performance.

You are right: Orson's personal almost seemed to prophesize what Marlon Brando would become. Another poster mentioned Jackie Gleason as Buford T. Justice, but I was thinking Hal Smith as Otis the drunk in "The Andy Griffith Show."

I agree.. I could've been watching a Missippi Vito Corleone.
Mississippi is pronounced Missippi here in Alabama.

              Completely agree, it was uncanny.
