OMG! Other people, yay. Nice of you to join the lively discussion (make sure to note the sarcasm). But seriously, great to hear people love this great film.
It is one of my favorites of his movies too! That and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof..have you seen that one?
But not only does anthony franciosa have a strong performance but so does angela landbury, richard anderson and whoa orsen welles is sooooo good. He made me laugh so much not just with his quips but his persona as well. The whole damn cast was great.
Oh! And the dialogue? It has so many great quotes but my fav has got to be
"Miss Clara, You slam a door in a man's face before he even knocks on it" Mmmm, Paul, so sexy even when he isn't doing anything special.
Another one is "The world belongs to the meat eaters, Miss Clara, and if you have to take it raw, take it raw."
and can't forget "Clara, Claaara, Cla haa harah"

I think that general store scene is on of the hottest, his gaze is so intent as seduction that I couldn't imagine any one not falling in love or lustwhich ever.
And the end lines are realy cute too. sighs blissfully

I like this movie too. They should make a box set with this movie, From the Terrece (my fav), THe Young Philadelphians and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Even though Newman and Woodward were already married when all of these movies were made, sometimes their chemistry wasn't there. On the Terrece in which she plays a sexaholic their chemistry was much better. I think Newman and Remmick would of been a better couple in this movie. In any case it was a very enjoyable movie. I am happy that Fox movie network are showing this movie and From the Terrece lately.

I saw this movie for the very first time TODAY and look: a gaggle of very recent comments
I really liked the dialogue so much insinuation and double entendres as well as the blunt, direct stuff.
I am fond of steamy southern stories. Some of my favorites on film are
Streetcar Named Desire, Babydoll, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
.
I mention two more rather unrelated favorites simply as recommendations

and Roman Polanski's

I love a Place in the Sun. Another southern background movie that was made in the 60's was a movie called The Chase, with Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. Redford escaped from prison, but the real story was about the southern town he came from.
I love that movie. It comes on cable every once in a while. -

I actually loved Newman and Woodward in this one. You mentioned that you would have preferred Newman and Remmick as a couple. Have you ever seen "Sometimes A Great Notion" AKA "Never Give An Inch?" Another good one, with Paul Newman and Lee Remmick as a married couple.

I've loved this film since watching it with my mother as a child. I have her to thank for introducing me to many great classics. The only one I had objection with though is Gone With the Wind. I still can't believe that they actually re-released it a theatres a few year ago. Such romanticized drivel. There is a reason why many people don't mind Mitchell's writing these days. This movie is the only reason the writer is known to begin with. Faulkner on the other hand, though a man of his time and place, I can respect. I always loved his story, A Rose for Emily the most though.

I adore this movie so much but to correct Marbleann kindly Newman & Woodward wern't married when this was filmed they married after production wrapped

Lee was incredibly gorgeous. I'd never seen anything she'd done beforeOmen ond perhaps Sometimes a Great Notion.

with Jack Lemmon. She'll knock your socks off!!

Will have to check out Days of Wine and Roses. First movie I saw a young Lee Remick in was this one and Baby the Rain Must Fall. Both hot performances with emphasis on hot.
Put Dirty Harry in the IMDB top 250!

One of my favorite Lee Remick movies is "Experiment in Terror" made in 1962, co-starring Glenn Ford with Blake Edwards doing the best job of directing of his career. The Henry Mancini score is a classic! I don't want to give anything away- but check out Ross Martin as Red. he should have won the Oscar-or at least been nominated! Enjoy!

I love this movie. I have to watch it whenever it's on. The story, the characters, the town, everything works. The dialogue is some of the best I've ever heard. My favorite from Newman's Hollywood Pretty Boy years. They cast him for his looks and got a very good Actor as well. TLHS not sappy tear-jerker
or melodrama like some of his others from the same period. Now about the rest of the cast.Love'em all exceptTony Franciosa. Just flat out misscast.
No matter how many times I see him in TLHS, I just can't buy anything he says or does. No style, no substance, bad accent. Totally over the top line delivery. And he just doesn't look like a VARNER. Dennis Hopper or Earl Holliman at that time would have been much better choices. Check out Hopper in GIANT and Holliman in THE RAINMAKER and see what you think. -

I am so very pleased that all of you love this film - and its incredible cast! I saw this film when it first came out! LOL How long ago is that? I must have been in my early teens, and though I didn't quite understand the sexual tension, on the other hand, I knew that I wanted to marry Paul Newman when I grew up, unfortunately, he was already taken. This film, and Paul, have been a favourite of mine every since.
It's a shame about Franciosa he should have been oozing testosterone with all that Italian-ness, buthe never appealed to me either then or now! I agree, Dennis Hopper what a great choice for that part! However, there are a myriad of films where I have forgetten the co-star but I have never forgotten Franciosa was in it! Perhaps we are both doing him a disservice!
Anyway, everyonecongratulations on your taste!
