From BigPhil: I discovered this movie on late night tv back in the 70's and by the early 80's had a scratchy vhs of it full of commercials. Long after knowing every line by heart, I would watch this film (or sometimes just a few scenes) just to hear the poetry of the dialogue. The scene of Will Varner confronting his daughter Clara over her being an old maid and not producing grandchildren(at 23). Will and Minnie Littlejohn drinking beer on the porch. I could go on and on There's such an economy of words here,of understatement,of overstatement, this is the way southerners really talk. If you fall for this movie and really get to know it, you'll find yourself throwing the lines around. I can proudly say my scratchy vhs copy has been retired, its on pristine dvd now "Ashes and char! Flame follows that man around like a dog!!"

I totally agree. This is some of the best dialogue ever written. I was watching this movie on my portable DVD player on a very bumpy plane ride a few days ago. Even though I've seen the movie a number of times, I got so absorbed in the characters and the dialogue that I forgot to panic about my plane bouncing all over the sky. Now that's a great movie!

I recently saw The Long Hot Summer, and I was moved by the dialogue. I was especially struck by Clara's declaration to Ben at the end of the movie. I would love for someone to help me obtain that part of the dialogue. I was moved and have always felt that way myself.

Actually, Clara is repeating Ben's declaration to her earlier:
All right then, run, lady, and you keep on running. Buy yourself a bus ticket and disappear. Change your name, dye your hair, get lost - and then maybe, just maybe, you're gonna be safe from me. -

i am watching TLHS right now. i luv this movie. i just caught an error though & was wondering has anyone else every caught it ? ( i'm sure it has ) when will varner pulls up at home after the confrontation w/ alan, ben & clara, lucius runs out telling him about the animal that was born. he calls him, " mr. wells, mr. wells " before he explains about the animal.
