i think they should have made it where the Californian finally spotted the distress calls and came and saved all the passengers

Slight problem. The Californian didn't show up until the survivors were on the Carpathia. And if the Californian had done more all might have been saved. A Night to Remember is based on history not wishful thinking.

Yeah I kinda like that ending better, too. It's such a shame so many things went wrong.
