    Perchance To Dream
is up there, as well as
    Shadow Play
    .
    A Nice Place To Visit
, with its sadistic ending (not sayin' Rocky didn't have it comin', but still,is this how "cosmic justice" is meted out?
). It was an extremely well made, deceptively well written episode

"Perchance To Dream" is really wonderful, for its raw terror I think.
I have to admit though, every time I watch A Nice Place To Visit I cant help but picture Rocky being tormented with daily recitations by Pip from the
      Winnie The Pooh
      book series.

"The Hitch-Hiker". It reminds me of "Carnival of Souls" (1962) which scared the heck out of me back in the day (and still does!)

Yes, and it gets better with repeat viewings. If you're not in the mood for it,and understandably, most of us probably are not most of the timeit just feels like a lengthy, almost story-less fever dream, as it "what was
          that
all about?", and I suppose rightly so. But there's more to it than that, something universal, and it can get to you at some unconscious level. It's very modern.
          As to
          A Nice Place To Visit
, it sort of comes down to "be careful what you wish for" in addition to, obviously, "mind your step" (etc.) as to how you live your life. It's a stark, fascinating episode, of which the first season had so many. Basic nuts and bolts storytelling.

I always enjoy "Carnival of Souls", telegonus. Whenever Herk Harvey as "The Man" makes his first appearance, I find myself looking over my shoulder. It's involuntary. Such a freakin' eerie film. That abandoned pavilion is creepy.
You're right about the first season of "The Twilight Zone" having so many stark, fascinating episodes. My all-time favorite is "The After Hours". It's not the scariest episode, but it's fascinating and has its moments of suspense.

Thanks, Dr. Julia. I've never seen
              Carnival Of Souls
              .
Yeah, go figure. One of these days.
              But the first season
              TZ
is a treasure trove of small scale
              angst
and foreboding, and quite unlike the later seasons. I wouldn't call it better necessarily. Maybe purer. I like Rod Serling's opening comments better for this season than for any other. The emphasis is on the Twilight Zone as that of the imagination, which suggests that it could be horror or sci-fi but that it needn't be either (
              per se
, I suppose I should add). The budgets got bigger, but not that big, later on. It feels like the was more "outdoorsy stuff" in the later eps (but then maybe not). I think of the
              noir
              ish
              What You Need
              as
              echt
              -first season
              TZ
              The aforementioned
              A Nice Place To Visit
              is another.

                      You most fear "The Invaders"
A little alien arrives at a farm house in an adorable little flying saucer. But the wee silver man is not as cute as he seems. Nor is he an alien? This is one for those who hop on a chair at the sight of a mouse.
                      It is?
                      Actually, I love that one.
                      Damn I'm good.

I got Eye of the Beholder as well. I think it's too talky and it's not a favorite now, but it's one of the first episodes that fascinated me as a child.

The After Hours for me. As a child and to this day (I'm 36), I've always had this nagging suspicion that mannequins have real people trapped underneath those fake bodies. Kind of like House of Wax

Mine: You most fear "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street"
This episode reminds us that the fear of thing is often worse than the thing itself. Neighbors turn on each other as a cloud of paranoia hangs over a small town. Why would aliens waste energy invading our planet when they could just let us tear each other apart?
