Lenita Lane who played the Lizzie Allen character and the movie's director Crane Weber were husband and wife. Do you suspect that may have had any impact on her landing the role?

I don't knowbut I DO know that she was in a previous movie her husband made WITH Vincent Price againThe Mad Magician, and in that movie she had a line that Cornelia had in this movie. VERY coincidental, isn't it? AND, in the Mad Magician, Lenita Lane's character was a murder mystery author. Imagine that.

I wondered how an such an older character actress I'd never seen before got such a large part in a film though she certainly was very good in the role. Lenita's roles prior to this weren't that frequent and usually bits; surprisingly this proved to be her final acting job. Crane Wilbur by the way was a pretty famous movie star of the 1910's and the leading man of the classic serial The Perils of Pauline opposite Pearl White.

It's amazing how much we can learn from one another on this valuable website which is one of my absolute favorites. I didn't realize Crane Wilbur was a movie star himself although now noticing most of his starring roles were during the silent films era. Nor did I know until now he was the leading man in "Perils of Pauline." Thanks for sharing those insights! My other favorite movie he directed was "House of Wax (1953)" starring Vicent Price, Carolyn Jones, Paul Cavanagh and Charles Bronson. But "The Bat (1959)" is particularly exceptional and I believe will prove to be one of those great classic films which stands the test of time.

Wow, thank you for being so nice in your reply, sadly not that common an event on imdb. I almost started a thread about who was this obscure actress who got such an important role in the film and didn't have to after reading your informative post.

The civility or lack thereof has entirely to do with a poster's age. I'm 58. Our generation and those prior were taught to be respectful toward one another especially our elders. Unfortunately that's no longer the case as one can unhappily witness on nearly any website, forum or YouTube.
So glad you were able to benefit from details I posted regarding this exceptionally entertaining vintage film.
Once you can get past all the bickering and mudslinging which goes on between the Gen-X(box) crowd and all those subsequent there's a great deal of useful information online to be gained. But the process of having to navigate that jungle can be quite punishing. Thanks for taking the time to write back and contribute!
