I was just wondering if this was re-released in the 1980s or not. I've never seen it, but there was a seller on eBay selling an 80s re-release movie poster. The poster is very coolbut I could NOT imagine this being re-released in theaters 20 + years later. If it's such a classic, why is it on such cheap-o-rama DVD releases?

Well the same could be asked of Night of the Living Dead, the Last Man on Earth, Carnival of Souls, perhaps even House on Haunted Hill, but nobody's complaining about them being simultaneously cheap and classics.

The imdb says that the film had it's network premiere on CBS in 1984! So there is a good chance that the film was re-released in the early 1980's possibly before it premiered on U.S. network television.
All the best,
