Aside from the fact that Marilyn Monroe was pregnant during the filming, there is also another consideration here. This film was made prior to the "Twiggy" look that became popular in the mid-late 60s, and has continued on to this day. At the time, thin women were considered in not unattractive, at the very least unhealthy. Voluptuousness was a whole lot more appealing to men of that era. That's why Mae West, Marilyn Monroe, Jean Harlow, and the like were considered sex symbols. They had curves. Something changed all that in the 1960s, and now any hint of curvaceousness on the human body is considered fat and ugly. We are much too obsessed with weight loss and dieting now. It's no wonder so many young women have problems with anorexia and bulemia.
I think the relevance of all this is blown way out of proportion. Sex symbols like Marilyn and Jayne Mansfield were actually criticised in their OWN time for gaining weight by the press, and notice how the modern media only criticises the weight of C-list tabloid stars? Famous modern sex symbols like Jennifer Lopez, Scarlett Johansson, Salma Hayek, Beyonce, and Christina Hendricks are almost never referred to as fat, and there are just as many instances where celebrities are criticised for being too thin (though no one ever mentions those). And it's not true that curvaceousness fell out of popularity in the 60's. If that were so, women like Raquel Welch, Ursula Andress, Faye Dunaway, Elke Sommer, and Brigitte Bardot would have never maintained the overwhelming amount of popularity they gained for their sex appeal. And it's ridiculous how often the "so many young women have problems with anorexia" is brought up when comparing the staggering rise of obesity issues today to anorexia is like comparing the sun to Pluto.
And besides all of that, the "thin is in" mindset has only ever applied to Hollywood. How many real life women want to be boyish looking or emaciated and how many real life men want the same from women? I sincerely doubt the original poster's opinion was influenced by fashion magazines. -

For my money, Marilyn was at her sexiest most beautiful most luminous most sensual in the likes of
The Prince and the Showgirl, Some Like It Hot
and
The Misfits
, where she was more voluptuous, and to-a-degree more natural looking than in her earlier career. -

Well, Im sure that ,back in the 50s when they were making this movie, pleasing some idiot on imdb (who most likely wasnt even born yet) was their top priority. Dont worry, the movie has only been popular for over fifty years so Im sure its just a passing fad. Marilyn is still a sex symbol half a century after her death, so Im sure your critique of her body is really going to change all that.

Yes Marilyn was 7 or 8 months pregnant when she miscarried during this film, and she was plumper than usual. The black and white decision was to hide her weight and the heavy makeup of Curtis and Lemon.
Upon viewing the film Marilyn said of herself, "I look like a fat pig and I don't ever want to see this film again" - the last part may not be exact wording, the first part is though.
Having read all the debacle about voluptuous or not. Women were smaller, shorter and therefore lighter in the 50s and 60s, waists were smaller and the waist to hip ratio generally bigger, which is where the curves are, not in the so called "fatness" of someone.
Someone who had to fit her actual costumes to mannequins said they had to use children's mannequins for them. MM was tiny, like Kate Moss with boobs. How many people have 24 inch waists these days? Going to the gym a lot changes the hip waist ratio too, less hips therefore that attractive hour glass ratio goes out the window. Gym bunnies tend to have boyish figures. -

It is a fact that Marilyn was pregnant and she blamed the miscarriage on the film and the physical activity required in so many scenes.
If you have ever seen the footage of her leaving the hospital after losing the baby she looks so vunerable and sad that your heart breaks for her. -

Got this movie off Netflix because I hadn't seen it in a long time, & I can't stop putting it on slow-mo when we first see her character on the train. When she shuts the curtain & her booty bounces, WOW! That's hot. That silky black dress fit her curves perfectly in my opinion. There is nothing wrong with a woman who is "chubby." Just more to love, that's all

Dear MermaidsMarilyn did not discover she was pregnant until filming was underway. When they went on locationshe still pretty trimshe said, "Oh, all this fresh air will be good for the baby!" (She had gained weight during her two years off the screen anyway, so her pregnancy showed immediately.)
The "pig" remark is TOTALLY made up by Marilyn's maid Lena Pepitone, who could barely speak or understand English. According to Pepitone's booknow regarded as fact, alasMM raced from the theater crying, TORE off her gown at home, and screamed she looked like a "fat pig" How could this be? Monroe had already seen the movie TWICE at private screenings (pics exist of her laughing and enjoying herself) She knew what to expect.
And rather than crying, she joyfully went off to party with Arthur and friends after the premiere.
She miscarried after the film was completed, and was probably well into her fifth month.
Her reservations about the movie had nothing to do with her appearanceshe remained plump through "Let's Make Love" and "The Misfits" Rather, she felt hers was only a supporting role, and that her initial qualms to making the film, were correct. (She was similarly disappointed by her small role in "Let's Make Love.") -

MermaidsMarilyn saw "SHIH" twice at special screenings, before the premiere in New York. Photos exist of her laughing and enjoying it. The quotes of her screaming about her weight, after the premiere, come from the fictions of Lena Pepitone's book (which years later she admittedin her broken Englishhad been totally fabricated.) If MM was so upset about her weight, one imagines she might have dieted more strenuously for "Let's Make Love" and "The Misfits." She didn't mind the weight because her bosom was bigger. But critics at the the time were merciless in their negative comments. (She lost TOO much weight, in my opinion, in '62.) Wilder and the cameraman did all they could to shadow and disguise her condition. But in some of those gowns, it was impossible.
The night of the "Hot" premiere she is radiant, and went on to party for hours after. (Unlike Pepitone's version, which has her running from the theater in tears, coming home and "ripping" her gown off.)
Shortly before her death she cited "Hot" as the movie in which she "got it across" as a comedienne.
If anything about her body upset her, it might well have been the fact that it's clear she is very pregnant, not simply plump. Losing the baby was traumatic for her. -
