It didn't seem to matter to the main plot, but I was curious to know other people's interpretation. When the doctor and Jacques go to see a young boy in the clinic, he gives wrong answers to how many fingers the doctor is showing. Later, they talk to each other and seem to have a common diagnosis. Do you have any idea of what it was about?

It's to show that the doctor was not purely evil, he does care for his patients and their well being, just as he cares about his own daughter's well being.
So it shows that from his own perspective, he doesn't intend to harm the girls, he just wants to heal his daughter, and they just happen to be collateral damage. -
