I was actually considering Raquel too, in fact, I think Raquel is the most iconic character overall to have only been in the show five to six years.

I agree with your list, although I'd include Tracy Barlow as well.

Great list but I'd add Tracy, Hayley and Raquel.
I wonder if any of today's young female characters will ever become iconic.

Sorry I would shorten the list significantly, otherwise it becomes meaningless.
Lots of those characters were in it for decades but that doesn't make them iconic. How was Mavis - for instance - iconic? She stood behind a shop counter and was the butt of Rita's derision for many years, had some joke relationships, hardly iconic really. My list would be:
Elsie Tanner, Annie Walker, Ena Sharples, Hilda Ogden, Bet Lynch, Vera Duckworth, Deirdre Barlow, Liz McDonald.
At a real push I might include Gail - but again is that just because she's been in it ages? What makes her character iconic? She's an unambitious mother/housewife with questionable approach to relationships, and barely steps out of her own front door. She seems too much of a comic character to be considered 'iconic'.
Carla got close to being an icon but no cigar.
I am ANYTHING but a pugnacious upstart

Sorry, disagree with your reasoning, even though I don't completely understand it. It is not simply because they were in it for decades. It is because much of these characters are fondly remembered by lots of people, and were really colourful, had lots of both comical and dramatic stories over the years, and are seen as more traditional Coronation Street characters than recent ones, such as Eileen Grimshaw, and Maria.
Your reasoning seems to be that some of them are too comical to be considered iconic. That is something I do not understand. Mavis is iconic for that very reason. She was entertaining, maybe not to your personal opinion, but to a wide variety, she was. In fact, she was for years parodied by Les Dennis, is highly recognised by lots of people, both longtime viewers and those were never keen viewers, is fondly remembered for comical scenes with Rita in the Kabin, and also with Derek, that is iconic, as she stands for the definitive example of comic relief in the show.
Betty, along with Bet, is a Rovers icon. When you think of the Rovers, you always think of Betty, along with Annie, Raquel, Jack, Bet. Emily, Rita, Sally, Gail, Audrey, are all part and fabric of Coronation Street's history. In fact, all the characters I mentioned were strongly written characters, who represent golden eras of the show, who were unique in their own way, whether it was for dramatic purposes, or comical, the latter you seem to have an issue with.

I agree, I would define "Iconic" as characters everyone remembers (preferably fondly) some characters are only in the show for a while and make a massive impact and some are in it for years and barely register.
Was Mrs Walker mentioned? I would include her too!
Goodnight, good luck and may your God go with you
