Why do they always look down on the intelligent?

The answer is simple. Society used to discriminate against ethnic, disability minorities etc. Our PC society says that is no longer acceptable. But it's human nature to bond together by picking off the weakest of the pack. So we are left with only the option to pick off those who are actually superior eg wealthy, middle-upper class, etc.

There is also discrimination against single and childless people, although it's not spoken of much. Roy is another intelligent character that receives eye rolls when he displays his knowledge.

Adam is a qualified solicitor and Tracy and Peter both ran successful businesses, so they can't be exactly stupid but they criticised Daniel. And they made it seem like reading a book for it's own sake was a crime.
But they did the same thing when Ken was first in the show as a young man. His brother wanted to be a footballer while Ken wanted to go to University and his family didn't understand him. -

They always do this in Corrie. The minute anybody displays a decent vocabulary or shows the slightest bit of ambition, it's singled out to be mocked It annoys me. Just because you're working class and don't live in a posh area doesn't mean you shouldn't have aspirations!
