Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Breakfast at Tiffany's

    Forlorn_Rage — 9 years ago(April 19, 2016 11:40 PM)

    Hello all,
As some of you might be aware, Gloria Steinem was tonight's guest programmer. Unfortunately, I missed her commentary for "A Taste of Honey" and "Breakfast at Tiffany's."
If anyone can provide me the content of Robert Osbourne and Steinem's discussion, whether from memory or recording, partial or complete, please share whatever you can. I am very interested in knowing what was discussed about these films and Steinem's own, personal opinions on them. Thanks!

I was quite surprised that Gloria Steinem picked this as one of her favorite movies given what Holly does for a living. She flirts and then lives off tips given for the powder room attendant 🙂
Steinem said that she liked the idea of reinventionHolly flees a drab childhood for NYC and seems quite happy. After all, Holly transforms herself into the urban sophisticate.
Steinem said she read that it was one of the first movies that allowed a woman to be sexual (outside of marriage, that is) without being "punished" at the end. Instead we get "The Hollywood Ending."
She also commented on the "shared" dreamlike quality of movies. In my opinion, Breakfast at Tiffany's certainly qualifies.

All DVDs should have ENGLISH as a subtitle option.

Thanks so much for the info! I do remember Steinem saying all that in the opening before the movie started. Do you remember what she said at the closing by any chance?

          [Steinem] read that it was
          one of the first movies
that allowed a woman to be sexual (outside of marriage, that is) without being "punished" at the end. Instead we get "The Hollywood Ending."
Even if one ignores many Pre-Code films, her claim is still factually incorrect. She needs to watch more films between 1934 - 1961.

She mentioned wanting to get out of her small town, Toledo I think? So perhaps that was some way to connect with Holly and her transformation?
