Reluctantly, I watched this movie at my girlfriend's house (it's one of her aunt's favourites), but I was pleasantly surprised. Not my type of movie byu any means, but this was certainly better and more intelligent than many of these days romantic comedies.
Plus, Sandra Dee is always welcome.

I had the good fortune to watch this with my 74 year old mother of all people a couple of years back, which for some reason made the movie seem that much better.underrated movie, gets 8 stars from me, pretty fun little movie..

Honestly? I didn't care much for it. Hudson, Lollobrigida, Darin and Dee are all excellent, of course, but it's such a badly structured movie with even shallower views about love and relationships. It's hard to believe Robert Mulligan, of all people, directed it. Fortunately we got

in the end.

I'm not a big fan of Rock Hudson movies but this has a lot of good lines as well as wonderful scenery and moments such as Cedric the drunken parakeet.
It's hard to imagine any mature adult being pleased with a young man singing "Multiplication" to a young woman in his or her care. The game is to get her pregnant! Meanwhile, beautiful unmarried lovers are doing their best to get back into the same bed, with the woman wearing sexy negligees and the man ready with the liquor, and they have been meeting like this for years. "We never spoke of marriage. We were happy!" And people say this era's movies were so innocent!
I like the generational war aspect, as well as the "do what I say, not what I do"the reasoning being that you are free to have sex with a consenting adult when you are no longer an impressionable child, with wisdom finally achieved by the youth and imparted to the elder. There is also the women's lib aspect where the unequal relationship is brought up including the woman having to put out the effort to learn the man's language because he couldn't be bothered to learn hers. And there is the American culture vs Italian culture aspect. It makes this more complex than the beach movies where we usually see young men and women in those years.
Was there ever a movie where a truck full of heavily molting birds got down the road without incident?

Maybe I went in with low expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this film. Very funny script, and like another poster mentioned, some very quotable lines. The location filming added another layer to the film, and the supporting characters as well as the leads are all fine. I'm not usually a fan of this type of flick, but for what it is, it's very good.
