Years and years of winning for Fats? I think he could afford it. I thought Paul Newman had some silly lines while the first game with him. Eventually they went away. Piper showed more acting chops that's suitable for the movie while Paul was leaning toward the theatrical side. I found it to be a major problem in the early part of his career; sometimes he used his handsome looks as a crutch. He eventually overcame them and became a more polished actor.

I know Fats could afford to lose but where did he get the cash from to pay Eddie?
Fats didn't know that Eddie was going to turn up that night and even if he did, he wouldn't have had tens of thousands of dollars in cash in his pockets. -

Probably fronted by Bert who's good for it.

I think not at the end. Eddie cut off all ties with Bert after the suicide of his girlfriend.

Did you fall asleep and miss the last 10 minutes??
Bert was still backing Eddie which is why he expected a 50% cut of Eddie's money at the end.
He clearly looks excited when Eddie sinks a shot that looked impossible at the beginning of the game.
He tells Eddie that he's still his manager and talks about the two of them making a lot of money together in the future. -

All right, I guess I misread that. I thought their business ended after the suicide, then met up again at Ames, and came up with a new deal after the match.

That was made clear; he started out with $3,000. If he lost, the game was over, but he got on a roll, so the money piled up.

It seems like the standard rate for challenging Fats was $100 a game because that’s what Fats suggested to Eddie just before their first match but Eddie raised it to $200.
This was raised to $1000 a game by Eddie during that match when he was ahead by roughly $1000.
It was at this point where Bert got involved and started paying Eddie some of the money when Fats lost a game.
When Bert met Eddie after their poker game, he told Eddie that Fats would start off with a higher stake in a rematch as he knew Eddie was a tough opponent.
When Eddie returns to play Fats again, Fats suggests $1000 a game but Eddie suggests $3000 a game which is all the money he has. -

No, but I like both Kirk Douglas and William Wyler.

I never understood how breaking his thumbs was enough for revenge when he could just do it all over again.
I suppose it is to teach him not to hustle in that town again.
I dunno.
Did he learn his lesson and move on?
Either those were tamer times (No mass shootings back then.) or they didn't want to be too harsh for a movie or whatever but it seems that to really get revenge they would have permanently crippled him.
Which would have been even more cringe but he can recover from broken thumbs.
I thought it was clever the way they filmed that scene.
Today it would be in graphic detail with sound efx that would have been way too much where here it is subtle for just enough cringe.
Movies were not anywhere near as gory back then so we thankfully got the, "Less is more," approach as unintentional as that may have been.*
*See the Psycho shower slash scene for another example.

I agree and was surprised he managed to recover from that in no time. Had it been done just after the game with Fats and then segued to the middle with Piper Laurie, I would've accepted the length between the major pool events.
