well the two films (The Hustler/Cool Hand Luke) the OP mentioned i would say are Newman's best followed by 'The Color of Money' (1986)

although 'The Sting' and 'Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid' where pretty close behind it
although from what i can tell it does seem like 'Cool Hand Luke' is one of his most popular/most liked performances.

Gold: Hud. Because it's a better film.
Silver: The Hustler"
Bronze: Cars. The way he transformed into a car; both physically and emotionally. Amazing. Most people at his age when he did that wouldnt be able to get so revved up, nor be able to stomach the diet required to play the role, all the gasoline, oil. Not to mention the constant waxing! More impressive than DeNiro's "Raging Bull" method transformation? I think so. -

Hud. Best Newman performance of all. Then The Hustler, then Cool Hand Luke.
However saying that, my favorite Newman film of all time and also my favorite film of all time is Cool Hand Luke. Just a great film.
But in this film - The Hustler George C. Scott is the best.. how he missed winning best supporting actor for this is one of the all time great oscar mis-steps.. -

2 movies..one when he was younger called Cat on a Hot Tin Roof..he was raw and his performance was off the charts intense as a riled up young man and his performance opposite of Elizabeth Taylor(a superstar at that time) would bode well for the future.
when he was a bit older(69) a movie called Nobody's Fool..outstanding performance of an almost-elderly and unfulfilled man looking to make things right.
