One movie that never got the kudos it deserved due to poor DVD releases and even worse original prints was this old Edward G. Robinson movie called The Red House. Brilliant no-budget moviemaking! You're more than likely find it in the discount bins at the supermarket, but I got my copy in a 100-movie Mystery and Suspense pack I picked up from Amazon.
Another one you might want to check out is Orson Welles' adaptation of Kafka's The Trial. Luckily, that's gotten a proper remastered release, so it'll be easier to find. Lots of shadows and mysteries with no answers.
    Hope you enjoy!

      Two words: Hammer Horror.
You may have to hunt through some rubbish but for my money they made some of the best creepy, low-budget psych horror films ever!

The Red House is indeed brilliant. One of my favorites.

Any movie that can be both scary AND a Christmas movie AND watchable with your grandparents AND great is a very impressive feat! Long live Reverend Powell!

Try SOLE SURVIVOR from the early 80's. Very similar to CARNIVAL OF SOULS in atmosphere and creepiness. It takes place during the holiday season without being about the season. It's just been released on DVD and it's beautiful!

I remember reading about Night Tide on my old account from your post, and now that I've finally seen it it has become one of my favorite films, so thank you!

Second The Innocents, and on a similar tip, more genteel though still creepy as:

(For the clickshy that's MR James's 'Whistle & I'll Come to You' with the great
Michael Hordern, and a nice helping of bottomless dread.)

The Innocents is really creepy, I haven't seen Carnival of Souls (but i'm going to today!), but both films sound similar in the fact that both are ghost stories made with little to no effects!

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this one yet but check out House on Haunted Hill if ya get the chance! Make sure you rent the 1959 original. Skip the remakeit's pretty much crap in my opinion.

since nobody mentioned it, night of the demon is quite good.. as is black sunday, haxan, and the japanese films kwaidan, and onibaba. to second some already mentioned masterpieces.. the innocents, THE HAUNTING, freaks, kill baby, kill, vampyr, night gallery.. all really great older horror films. i think probably the scariest two in my mind are the haunting, and bava's kill baby, kill.
