While 1962 wasn't really that long ago society at that time was still very socially conservative, it was probably believed that the film would be too frightening and thus was given the X rating.

The MPAA didn't have an X rating in 1962. The X rating was instituted in 1968. The original MPAA rating for this movie was "Approved."
The X rating the OP is referring to was from the UK. And in the UK in 1968, an X rating simply meant that the film was suitable for age 16 and above.
